The film focused on the transitions of young kids to teenagers, and how their personalities change within the setting of this season. Autumn is a transitional season from summer into winter. The season of autumn sets the general mood for the film.

Out of embarrassment, Hoshino rips up Hasumi’s ticket, Hasumi stabs Hoshino, and the movie ends. At the end of the movie, Hasumi goes to a Lily Chou Chou concert and meets “blue cat” in real life, which actually ends up being Hoshino. Hasumi begins to get tormented by him and he is coerced into joining in on committing crime and bullying. Once they get back, they begin junior high school and Hoshino becomes the class bully. Here, Hoshino has a near death experience and this trip serves as the turning point for the boys’ personalities. Hoshino and Hasumi, along with a few other elementary school kids, decide to take a trip to Okinawa. This is revealed at the end of the movie. Hasumi often chats with a person with the screen name “blue cat”, unaware of who the person really is. They find solace in the music of Lily Chou Chou, and Hasumi runs a fan website under the screen name “philia”, in which kids chat about Lily and interact under different screen names. In these younger years, the two boys are relatively good kids, Hoshino is a good student and Hasumi is very shy, but the two of them are both tormented by bullies at school. Hasumi comes from a poor family, while Hoshino is relatively wealthy, and the two become good friends in elementary school when they join the kendo club (a Japanese form of fencing). The movie does not progress chronologically, skipping back and forth between different years of the kids’ lives. The film follows two main characters, Shunsuke Hoshino and Yuichi Hasumi through elementary school and middle school, as they go through drastic personality changes.
